As the Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree DLC requires players to defeat Mohg, Lord of Blood, fans will want to know the fastest way to reach the boss.
While Elden Ring is famous for having multiple challenging bosses, most can be defeated by utilizing the bleed mechanic. However, Mohg, Lord of Blood is a unique boss as he uses bleed on the player to deal massive damage, especially at the start of the second phase. While many players go through their Elden Ring journey without defeating this version of Mohg, those who want to play the Shadow of the Erdtree must defeat him to jump into the added content.
To help with that, here’s the fastest way to reach the Lord of Blood version of Mohg in Elden Ring, along with some tips to defeat him.
What’s the quickest way to reach Mohg, Lord of Blood?
The quickest way to reach Mohg, Lord of Blood, is by advancing through White Mask Varre’s questline.
Mohg, Lord of Blood is located in the aptly named Mohgwin Palace. While the location is not accessible at the start, White Mask Varre’s questline can help players reach it quickly.
Here’s the step-by-step process for reaching Mohg, Lord of Blood as quickly as possible:
- Start White Mask Varre’s questline at the start of the game
- Defeat a shardbearer
- Meet the Two Fingers and Enia in Roundtable Hold
- Meet Varre at the Church of Roses in Liurnia of the Lakes
- Advance his questline through invasions
- Advance his questline further to receive the Pureblood Knight’s Medal
- Use the Pureblood Knight’s Medal to reach Mohgwin Palace and face Mohg
Advancing Varre’s questline requires the player to acquire a great rune. For the purposes of accessing the DLC, the most convenient one is Starscourge Radahn. After all, players must defeat Radahn to start the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.
Reaching Radahn can be a challenge in the early game however, and beating him is even more difficult. Players advance White Mask Varre’s questline by beating any shardbearer, and Godrick the Grafted and Rennala of the Full Moon are the designated early-game bosses. Regardless of who the player chooses, here’s how to reach Mohgwin Palace through Varre.
How to complete Varre’s questline to reach Mohgwin Palace
Players need to do invasions and do other things to curry favor with Varre in order to get a summons to Mohgwin Palace.
Defeating Radahn, or any shardbearer for that matter, allows players to speak with Enia at the Roundtable Hold. This act advances Verre’s questline and has him move from his original location near the introduction area’s Site of Grace to outside of the Rose Church entrance, found on an island south of the Academy of Raya Lucaria.
Continue speaking with Varre until he gives five Festering Bloody Fingers. Use three of those fingers to perform three invasions. It doesn’t matter whether the player comes out of those invasions victorious, as the quest will still progress, and speaking with Varre again will have him give the player the Lord of Blood’s Favor cloth.
Now it’s time to go to the Church of Inhibition, found in Liurnia of the Lakes, on a hill northwest of the Frenzied Flame Village. Inside, the player will discover the body of a woman on a chair, and interacting with it will give the option to grant the cloth Varre gave them with the corpse’s blood.
Take the dyed cloth to Verre at the Rose Church to get the Pureblood Knight’s Medal and complete his questline. The Pureblood Knight’s Medal is found in the player’s tool section to transport them to Mohgwyn Palace.
Players won’t be surprised to learn that reaching Mohgwin Palace doesn’t mean they can face Mohg instantly. Instead, Mohgwin Palace is a region with a straightforward path the player can take to progress.
The path will eventually lead to the Mohgwin Dynasty Mausoleum. A lift lets players reach Mohg, Lord of Blood’s boss arena and Miquella’s cocoon, which starts the DLC. Multiple Albinaurics reside below the lift that players can farm for some quick runes, whether to prepare for Mohg or the Shadow of the Erdtree bosses.
Tips for beating Mohg, Lord of Blood in Elden Ring
Mohg is a two-phase fight where the player must deal with attacks dealing a combination of fire and bleed damage to beat him, but some items and tips will make the fight easier.
Mohg’s first phase consists of the boss using his trident to inflict standard and pierce damage while spitting bloodflame to deal fire and bleed damage. Having armor and talismans with physical, fire, and blood-based damage resistance is smart.
However, Mohg’s Shackle, found in the Leyndell Royal Capital’s Subterranean Shunning Grounds, can stun the boss up to two times during his first phase, allowing the player to get some good hits in. This tool can’t be used during the second phase, but, in typical Fromsoftware fashion, there are strategies for that too.
Mohg gradually applies three magical and unavoidable rings on the player throughout his first phase. When he reaches 50% health, he activates the Bloodboon Ritual spell to heal Mohg and inflict blood loss on the player. The Purifying Crystal Tear, found on the Altus Plateau, can negate the effects of Mohg’s curse and get rid of the rings entirely.
Using the Purifying Crystal Tear doesn’t mean Mohg won’t go to his second phase, making his attacks tougher to dodge, largely thanks to his melee swings flinging blood. The best strategy here is to wait for the overhead slam attack that carries over from the first stage as it gives the player a window to attack. Of course, using the Mimic Tear to have an extra set of hands also helps.
