All you need to know about Stellar Blade, the former Project Eve

A new over-the-top, hack-and-slash adventure in the vein of Devil May Cry and Bayonetta is coming. Stellar Blade may be one of the PlayStation 5’s big exclusives of 2024 and details on its gameplay and release date are finally materializing.

Stellar Blade, the hack-and-slash action-adventure game from Shift Up and Sony, was first revealed as Project Eve in 2019. Since then, information on the game has been trickling its way down to fans. Clips and official statements have kept the game on the gaming industry’s radar, though there is still plenty of mystery about the game.

In the same way that Korean developers helped fill the Soulsborne void left by FromSoftware, Stellar Blade seems ready to plug the hole left by Bayonetta as it sits in an apparent limbo. However, with an unannounced delay, fans might have to wait a little longer to play it.

What is Stellar Blade?

Stellar Blade is an upcoming third-person action-adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic world. It is being developed by Shift Up and published by Sony.

Players fill the shoes of Eve, a human soldier who’s sent to Earth on a mission to rid the planet of alien invaders. While navigating the blasted planet and taking out anyone in her path, Eve meets Adam, who takes her to what seems to be the last surviving human city on Earth.

The game seems to be similar to the Bayonetta and Nier series, both in terms of its combat and elements of fanservice. Being a hack-and-slash game that features guns and possibly other ranged weaponry, the game also promises to include combat mechanics like parrying and using skills that deplete the “Beta Gauge.”

Gameplay clips emphasize the game’s exploration and traversal. Eve makes use of wall climbing and swinging on ropes to traverse the environment, along with her unnaturally high jumping abilities that also come in handy during combat.

Steller Blade release date details

Stellar Blade is set to be released in 2024, although the exact release date has not been revealed. While the game was previously set to be released in 2023, a post on the PlayStation.Blog confirmed the release date will be in 2024.

The blog post features several upcoming games coming to PlayStation and it seems as though they are placed in order of release. Stellar Blade is placed between the upcoming Rise of the Ronin and Destiny 2: The Final Shape expansion, which suggests a Q2 2024 release date. There is no confirmation of this, so fans ought to wait until things are official before making plans

Is Stellar Blade a PS5 exclusive?

Stellar Blade will be launching as a PS5 exclusive, although whether it makes its way to other consoles remains to be seen.

While Stellar Blade was initially being developed for release on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC back when it was called “Project Eve,” that has since changed. The developers have stated that the game will “take full advantage” of both the console’s graphical capabilities and the DualSense controllers’ haptic feedback.

It is unclear whether the game will be a timed exclusive or if it is set to be exclusive permanently. The general state of PlayStation and the gaming industry as a whole suggests that a PC port is likely to happen at some point. Xbox and Nintendo ports are less likely, however. Meanwhile, fans who were eagerly looking forward to Stellar Blade on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One will likely want to upgrade as developers continue to divest efforts from releasing games on past-gen hardware.
