Larian Studios has detailed what Baldur’s Gate 3 fans can expect from patch 7, which includes a new party member, but only for Dark Urge playthroughs.
Patch 7 is expected to arrive in September, and looks to be another meaty update to Baldur’s Gate 3 judging by how much info Larian has shared. While there are many exciting things to look forward to, the mention of an additional party member is perhaps the most intriguing.
The Dark Urge is one of the pre-built origin characters in Baldur’s Gate 3, though they have a unique storyline from the other origin characters. This new party member is specifically tied to the Dark Urge, and previously appeared in one of Baldur’s Gate 3’s most jarring moments. Warning: Some spoilers ahead for Dark Urge playthroughs in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Who is the new party member in Baldur’s Gate 3?
The new party member in Dark Urge playthroughs is likely Alfira, who appears as an NPC in all regular playthroughs. While not explicitly confirmed, Larian has suggested that the tiefling bard refugee might have a longer life. Not that much longer, though.

Alfira can be encountered early in any new playthrough. However, if a player has chosen to be the Dark Urge, Alfira will visit the party’s campsite, and be tragically murdered in the middle of the night by the player. The player must then choose to confess their crime to the rest of the party or hide Alfira’s body.
According to Larian’s Steam post, it sounds like Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 7 will make it possible to recruit Alfira as a party member and use her in battle, if there’s an empty slot for her. Larian has also stressed that Alfira’s inclusion is temporary, meaning she’ll likely be killed regardless.
While not a permanent inclusion, a playable Alfira is still notable as she’ll be the only party member whose default class is bard. It also wouldn’t be surprising if, following her addition, modders come up with ways to make her a fully realized party member.
What else is included in Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 7?
Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 7 will include a new party member for Dark Urge playthroughs, improvements to co-op mode, and official modding support.
Aside from bug fixes to the various origin characters, Patch 7 for Baldur’s Gate 3 will also include a dynamic split-screen mode. This means during co-op play, split-screen play will dynamically change to merge the screens together when players move close together. It will also include improvements to the extra-challenging Honor Mode, and brand-new evil endings for those who roleplay as villains.
Perhaps the biggest addition, though, is the official Baldur’s Gate 3 mod toolkit. This will make it easier for modders to come up with custom items, cosmetics, and even homebrew classes and races.
Although Larian still has a few more things planned for the game, like a photo mode and crossplay, Baldur’s Gate 3 patch 7 will be the last significant content update for the game. Patch 7 is scheduled for a September 2024 release, but fans can participate in a closed beta that’s taking place on July 22. Registration is available on the Baldur’s Gate 3 Steam page.
