Here’s what to know about Ionia before the next Arcane spinoff

Master Yi in Ionia

Ionia is one of the nations where future League of Legends projects like Arcane will take place, and fans will want to brush up on their lore.

With Arcane’s completion, longtime League of Legends fans have anxiously wondered which in-game nations will get the animated treatment. The fictional world of Runeterra has various regions, all home to different fan-favorite champions. While the brutal nation of Noxus was mentioned in Arcane, the same can’t be said for places like Ionia.

An interview with Arcane co-creator Christian Linke confirmed Ionia would be one of the three settings for future League of Legends projects. With an untold gap between Arcane and the next show or movie, now’s the best time for fans to get familiar with Ionia’s lore.

What is Ionia in League of Legends?

Ionia is an island nation in League of Legends that is home to champions such as Yasuo, Akali, and Ahri.

Unlike the military-minded Demacia, the people of Ionia have a more peaceful mindset. Most residents would rather live in peace and harmony than resort to violence. The nation’s refusal to participate in active wars was the primary reason for its lasting peace, allowing Ionian citizens to follow individual ideals and beliefs.

Ionia’s peace is a big reason the border between the material and spirit realms is fragile there, especially in places more in touch with nature. This freedom gave rise to different factions, including the Shojin monks, Kinkou, Navori Brotherhood, and even the Order of Shadow.

The nation’s peace ended when the Noxian empire attacked Ionia in a war that lasted several years. While Ionia eventually emerged as the victor, it wasn’t without great losses that rippled throughout Runeterra and affected the lives of various League of Legends champions.

With the war over, the people of Ionia are split into two. The first half wants to return to their former lives filled with peace and tranquility. The second half wishes to unite the provinces into one united nation to get revenge on Noxus. That uneasiness dogs and recolors the once-peaceful nation.

Which Ionian champions could come in the next Arcane show?

Ahri, Akali, and Jhin are among the Ionia champions most likely to be featured in the successor to Arcane.

While it’ll likely mostly focus on a handful of in-game champions from the various Ionian provinces, characters from other nations may also be featured.

For example, the Arcane character Singed may return in the Ionian project. The Zaunite scientist assisted Noxus in attacking Ionia through Chemtech bombs that had devastating effects on the land and its people. Singed’s efforts earned the ire of champions like Master Yi and Riven.

The complete list of Ionian League of Legends champions who could appear in the Arcane spinoff includes:

  • Ahri
  • Akali
  • Hwei
  • Irelia
  • Ivern
  • Jhin
  • Karma
  • Kayn
  • Kennen
  • Lee Sin
  • Lillia
  • Master Yi
  • Rakan
  • Xayah
  • Sett
  • Shen
  • Syndra
  • Varus
  • Wukong
  • Yasuo
  • Yone
  • Zed

Arcane served as origin stories for multiple champions originating from the twin cities of Zaun and Piltover. It would make sense for the project featuring Ionia to adapt the Noxus invasion, as that’s what the origin stories of most Ionian champions have in common.

Ionia has also been featured in League of Legends adaptations in the past. Marvel Comics ran a limited series starring Zed, who was looking to stop a string of murders committed by Jhin.
