Sturgeon in Stardew Valley are a precious catch since they let players get Caviar, but where are they actually found?
In Stardew Valley, most forms of fish roe are given a generic name. That even applies to legendary fish, who have uniquely valuable roe. But much like real life, Sturgeon produce the much sought after Caviar.
Alongside this, Sturgeon are part of the community center bundles on multiple levels. So where can Stardew Valley players get them and how can they use them to get Caviar? It’s a bit of a process, but it’s a potentially profitable one.
Where and how to catch Sturgeon in Stardew Valley
Players can catch Sturgeon from the mountain lake in the northern outskirts of Pelican Town.
Just outside the mines, players can find a lake with an island in the middle, connected to the rest of the town by narrow bridges. This lake has a unique pool of fish that can be caught separate from the river or hidden woods.
Alongside Sturgeon, this is also where players can catch Largemouth Bass and several other fish used in community center bundles. Unlike Largemouth Bass, however, Sturgeons aren’t available in any season.
Players can only catch Sturgeon in Stardew Valley during the summer and winter seasons. Not only that, but they’re only available from 6 am to 7 pm. This means that players can potentially catch one as they make their journey to the mines, but won’t necessarily be able to get one on their way out. This limitation can be worked around by using Magic Bait.
Alternatively, players can avoid fishing altogether by getting one from Krobus’ shop on Wednesdays or from the traveling cart. There are no guarantees that Sturgeon will appear in these locations however, so the only truly reliable way to catch them in Stardew Valley is to actually go fishing.
How to get Caviar in Stardew Valley
Caviar can be obtained in Stardew Valley by putting Sturgeon Roe into a Preserves Jar.
The process of getting Caviar is a fairly long one. After catching or otherwise obtaining a Sturgeon, players then need to put it into a Fish Pond. Fish Ponds can be built by Robin on the farm, and they will produce roe for almost any fish that is placed in them.
After putting a Sturgeon into a Fish Pond, it takes four days to produce Sturgeon Roe as of Stardew Valley version 1.6. Along the way, players will have to obtain some relatively valuable items for their Sturgeon to keep up production including a Diamond, Omni Geodes, and a Nautilus Shell.
After getting Sturgeon Roe, Stardew Valley players can convert it into Caviar by placing it into a Preserves Jar for four days. Caviar is unique from other similar artisan goods in Stardew Valley, as it technically stands as a unique item relative to the “aged” roes of other fish.
Caviar may be required in the special Missing Bundle found in Joja Mart after rebuilding the community center. After completing the Missing Bundle, players gain access to the movie theater.
Producing Caviar is not actually an especially good way to make money in Stardew Valley. Though real-life caviar is known for its luxurious price tag, players looking to make money off aged roes are better off using more expensive fish. Even outside legendary fish, fishing in caves can yield Lava Eels and Ice Pips, both of which produce more expensive aged roes.
