Reports about a Dragon Age: Dreadwolf name change have sparked discussion regarding remake of Dragon: Age Origins, but is there anything behind that?
Bioware has experienced some tough times in recent years. Its last few games could have done better, with live-service experiment Anthem exploding on impact and Mass Effect Andromeda being rejected by the series’ biggest fans. Bioware’s previous Dragon Age game, Inquisition, was released almost a decade ago but the studio has been visibly struggling with layoffs and lawsuits playing out publicly.
Despite being announced in 2018, fans still know very little about Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. While fans eagerly await a well-crafted, single-player RPG from Bioware, there still hasn’t been a true reveal for the game. The game’s only trailer is a pure teaser trailer, offering nothing substantive for fans to get excited about beyond its existence. A lot is riding on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf. Or at least, it was.
Dragon Age: Dreadwolf may be getting a new name
A report suggested Dragon Age: Dreadwolf has a new name that could be revealed soon.
“Dragon Age Dreadwolf probably won’t be there, Dragon Age will be there,” Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb said on the KindaFunnyGames podcast.
Grubb’s comment strongly implies that either the next installment of Dragon Age won’t be called Dreadwolf or fans will be getting another game in the franchise. This led to speculation from fans regarding a remake of Dragon Age: Origins, as well as a potential smaller-scale spin-off. Neither EA nor Bioware has substantiated or confirmed any of this.
Game and hardware often have codenames before a final release name. From 2018 to 2022, the title was unclear. Bioware confirmed the name in 2022 with the release of a teaser trailer. A name change after an official reveal to fans isn’t unheard of, though. Halo 3: Recon ultimately hit shelves as Halo 3: ODST and Final Fantasy Versus 13 famously became Final Fantasy 15.
Is the game Dragon Age Origins remake?
There is no reports or official confirmation that a Dragon Age: Origins remake is in development.
While speculation ran wild following Grubb’s statement, water was poured on those who got overly excited. Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier stated on the ResetEra forums that Grubb was referring to a new name for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, not a separate game.
Regardless of whether it’s called Dreadwolf or not, Bioware fans will be satisfied if the announcement is accompanied by a release date. Numerous reports have stated that the game is targeted for a 2024 release.
Fans have been hoping for a remaster or remake of the original Dragon Age: Origins. The timing would also be perfect, with CRPGs on a major upswing thanks to the success of Baldur’s Gate 3. Unfortunately, there’s no word of this classic getting a remake.
