Major release date news on Dragon Age: Dreadwolf has arrived, with the game reportedly coming in 2024, but can it save Bioware?
Bioware is not in good shape. On top of releasing no games since Mass Effect Legendary Edition in May 2021, Bioware faced mass layoffs in 2023. Several key figures were among the layoffs, which led to significant staff changes on existing projects including Mass Effect 4 and Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.
The company reiterated its commitment to releasing games that meet fan expectations, but the loss of staff led to delays on all existing projects. However, things may finally be turning around for the Edmonton-based game studio with reports of Dragon Age: Dreadwolf being relatively close to release.
Will Dragon Age: Dreadwolf come out in 2024?
Bioware has not officially confirmed a release window for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, but reports suggest it will launch in late 2024.
After months of radio silence, Bioware dropped a new trailer for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf in December 2023. Although it did not feature a release date at the end, it did feature a date for a full reveal in Summer 2024.
Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb reports that Bioware is internally confident that Dragon Age: Dreadwolf will have a release date sometime in late 2024. If the internal confidence is true, Bioware may be very close to polishing Dragon Age: Dreadwolf for release.
Even so, the company has an uphill battle after back-to-back critical flops. Bioware was previously one of the most beloved brands in game development thanks to its numerous blockbuster releases including Baldur’s Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and Mass Effect. The company’s acquisition by EA Games and the widely criticized ending to Mass Effect 3 undermined fan confidence. Mass Effect: Andromeda and Anthem were both poorly received and numerous controversies related to the company have seen the Bioware brand hit an all-time low.
What comes after Dragon Age: Dreadwolf for Bioware?
Mass Effect 4 will likely follow Dragon Age: Dreadwolf.
Mass Effect 4 continues its development, although not as a priority. Much like Bethesda with The Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield, Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s development means every other project now faces delays in turn. After Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s release date, whenever it might be, Bioware will likely focus all its efforts on the next Mass Effect title, despite unsubstantiated claims of a Dragon Age: Origins remake.
As for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf’s chances of success, it’s hard to say. The massive success of Baldur’s Gate 3 could attract thousands of new fantasy RPG fans to Bioware. Of course, it could be a double-edged sword if Dreadwolf turns out to be much less impressive than Baldur’s Gate 3. Either way, Bioware’s future likely hinges on Dreadwolf being a hit
