This may be your 1st look at Minecraft movie, Jack Black’s Steve

Jack Black in Minecraft movie

Leakers have allegedly found official pictures of Jack Black as Steve in the Minecraft movie alongside the design for the iconic Creeper monster.

The video game adaptation renaissance will continue in 2024. With Arcane’s second season and the Fallout TV show nabbing multiple Emmy nominations, few can deny that video games have finally been taken seriously as source material among mainstream audiences. However, the biggest video game adaptations continue to be those with a younger demographic.

The billion-dollar box office total of The Super Mario Bros Movie proved as much in 2023, and the Sonic the Hedgehog films aren’t far behind. The next major video game movie release is undoubtedly Minecraft, and yet fans still need more details about the film. Recent leaks may have finally given fans a first look at the Minecraft movie’s aesthetic.

Who is Steve in the Minecraft movie?

Jack Black will reportedly play Steve in the Minecraft movie.

Deadline reported in January 2024 that Jack Black joined the cast of the Warner Bros’ Minecraft movie. Some fans wondered how Steve’s iconic light blue shirt and dark blue pants would look on the Tenacious D icon. A leaker shared what they claim to be images of the movie’s style guide, which featured Jack Black in full Minecraft Steve regalia.

Additionally, the purported leak also showed how the blocky creatures will look in the Minecraft movie. Interestingly, the art style opted for photorealistic textures while still maintaining the cutesy block aesthetic.

“I imagine creepers as being made out of leaves or similar. I’m not sure why they explode,” said Notch when asked what Creepers are supposed to look and feel like.

None of these images are confirmed to be legitimate, but gamers of all ages have been giving their take on this approach to the Minecraft movie.

The photo shows the Creeper as an appropriately fuzzy and mossy-looking creature. The picture also revealed the design of Minecraft animals, such as sheep and bees, in their square-shaped glory. Many fans immediately pointed out the aesthetic similarities to Detective Pikachu.

Division among fans on whether the film will be good persists after the leaks. Some dislike the photorealistic approach, citing it as “creepy and weird.” Others love the Detective Pikachu inspiration, saying it’s a bold artistic choice. Some also expressed surprise at Jack Black’s casting, with many assuming Jason Momoa would take the role. The assumption stems from how much fanart of Steve depicts him as a buff man, given the constant labor of his profession.

Love it or hate it, all eyes will watch with interest as the Minecraft film looms ever closer to a release.
