Marvel Rivals has strong cross-play options without any cross-progression, but is there any chance that will change? Developers have suggested it could.
Marvel Rivals is being hailed as the Overwatch killer, but some claim it’s even better. The positive reviews are reflected in the game’s player count, which peaked at 400,000 within 24 hours of its full launch. While that number will likely come down to earth, the game enjoyed an explosive launch.
Part of the reason Marvel Rivals is so popular is because it’s highly accessible. It’s free-to-play, available on multiple platforms, and supports crossplay, meaning friends don’t need to worry about platform differences when playing together. However, there is one minor limitation.
Does Marvel Rivals have cross-progression?
While Marvel Rivals allows cross-platform play in casual modes, it doesn’t support cross-progression.
Players on PC can queue up with their friends who play on consoles, and vice versa, but that’s the extent of the game’s cross-platform features for now. While console players can keep their progress on their main platform, any battle pass purchases or unlocked items do not transfer between platforms. This means that while there’s the ability to play with friends whether they’re on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC, players who own both a PC and a PS5 will have to purchase everything twice.
This is something players may want to check before investing any money. While characters and other items are free, progress will not be available if players switch platforms after hours of gaming.
This feature not being included is disappointing for many fans. Numerous multiplayer games that support cross-play also support cross-progression, from Fortnite to Pokemon Unite. Games like Genshin Impact also let players use the same save data across multiple platforms, letting them do their dailies on their phone and then play the big moments on PlayStation 5 or PC. Marvel Rivals lacking this feature is certainly a noticeable omission.
Will cross-progression get added to Marvel Rivals?
Marvel Rivals developers stated on social media that cross-progression may be added in the future.
While this being unavailable at launch is disappointing for those who might have hoped to squeeze in extra gaming hours on their work computers, players shouldn’t lose hope. During a Discord Q&A session, the Marvel Rivals developers confirmed that cross-progression isn’t completely off the table. While answering a fan question, the developer revealed that cross-progression is being worked on, but it won’t be available at launch.
Currently, Marvel Rivals is in Season 0, which is shorter than the upcoming seasons, each of which will have a default duration of three months. This “pre-season” period will likely be shorter because the developer plans to introduce important features in Season 1. Though cross-progression may come to Marvel Rivals, fans shouldn’t necessarily expect it soon.
