Persona 6 is reportedly not ditching the series’ signature high school setting, something that fans are of two minds about.
The high school setting has been a cornerstone of the Persona series from the very beginning and served as a fundamental element of progression from Persona 3 onward. Each game had players wear the hats of high school students navigating everyday life while facing supernatural challenges that threaten all of human existence.
Some fans, however, feel that the high school setting might have overstayed its welcome after 28 years. There was some speculation, conjecture, and hope regarding a departure from the established high school setting in the upcoming mainline Persona entry, egged on by Persona 5 Strikers and Tactica both having adult party members. Unfortunately for some, word is that Persona 6 will not take a new direction with its setting.
Will Persona 6 have a high school setting?
Persona 6 will reportedly have a high school setting like its predecessors.
A leaker named Midori with a proven track record for breaking Atlus news such as the existence of Persona 3 Reload and details on the Persona 5 Tactica DLC responded to a tweet discussing a possible graduation to college in Persona 6. Midori flatly stated that this isn’t the case, and Persona 6 will once again send players to high school.
Midori didn’t say more, but that was enough to set expectations for the upcoming mainline game. This likely means that fans can expect Persona 6 to continue having players juggle building friendships, taking part in extracurricular activities, and killing monsters. Fans looking for an adult cast won’t be left out in the cold though, as for Shin Megami Tensei and the upcoming Metaphor: ReFantazio for a more adult alternative.
When is Persona 6 coming out?
Atlus has officially confirmed that Persona 6 is in development but has said nothing on when the game might come out.
Midori discussed Persona 6 in November, saying that Metaphor: ReFantazio, Persona 3 Reload, and a new spinoff codenamed “Project Asa” were set for release in 2024 alongside a Shin Megamie Tensei title that may have been Shin Megami Tensei 5: Vengeance. She stated that Persona 6 and Persona 5: The Phantom X are set for 2025, with a reveal date for P6 not yet internally set.
Alongside these, she has reported on wide-reaching efforts for the franchise including a Persona 4 Remake and many other titles. JRPGs have had a particularly strong year with both established names like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and under-the-radar series like Granblue Fantasy breaking out. That trend may be continuing for some time.
