While fans would desperately like to play Elden Ring 2 Miyazaki confirmed that it’s not in development, or even being considered by FromSoftware.
FromSoftware has been on a roll. Being one of the most consistent video game developers, fans constantly wonder what game the studio is working on. The studio has multiple popular IPs under its belt, including Armored Core and Dark Souls, though its single biggest name in recent years is Elden Ring.
With Elden Ring and its DLC both considered among the best releases of 2022 and 2024 respectively, it’s natural that fans want more Elden Ring goodness. However, that may not be in the cards for now according to FromSoftware president and Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki.
Will there be an Elden Ring 2?
Hidetaka Miyazaki stated there aren’t any plans to make an Elden Ring 2, though that doesn’t mean FromSoftware doesn’t want to do more with the Elden Ring IP.
Miyazaki attended the PlayStation Partner Awards 2024 Japan Asia event on December 3, 2024, during which he took questions from the media in attendance. The topic of a sequel to Elden Ring was eventually brought up when he stated the studio wasn’t “considering developing something like Elden Ring 2.”
The Elden Ring creator didn’t deny the possibility of expanding the Elden Ring IP another way. Miyazaki had previously stated Shadow of the Erdtree would be the only DLC for the game, largely thanks to its open-world nature.
Therefore, the expansion will happen in some other way. Elden Ring already has graphic novels, and there’s always the option to release spin-off games for the series. Miyazaki may also have hinted at a potential Elden Ring show or movie, something that George RR Martin has also teased in the past. With the success of League of Legends’ Arcane and Cyberpunk 2077’s Edgerunners, there’s no knowing what could happen.
However, anyone hoping for an actual Elden Ring sequel any time soon will be disappointed.
What is FromSoftware working on now?
FromSoftware is working on multiple projects of different genres simultaneously.
While Miyazaki doesn’t go into much detail about what games the studio is working on, he confirmed that multiple games are in development. Some games are directed by Miyazaki while different team members are directing others.
There’s no concrete information, but reports and interviews can give fans an idea of what to expect from FromSoftware. Job listings on the FromSoftware website suggest the studio is working on a mech-themed project which could be an Armored Core 6 DLC, follow-up, or something else entirely.
Additionally, there are reports that a remastered version of Dark Souls 3 is in the works. Miyazaki also stated he wants to direct a more abstract fantasy game “in the mid-to-long term,” though fans likely won’t hear anything about that for some time. Finally, with Sony looking to buy Kadokawa Corporation, fans are hopeful that Bloodborne may see a revival.
Ultimately, FromSoftware hasn’t confirmed anything thus far. Fans will likely have to wait for the next big announcement before anticipating or being excited about anything related to the studio.
