A new leak suggests that Call of Duty will continue its yearly release cycle with Call of Duty 2026 and 2027, with no annual breaks. This will reportedly include new follow-ups to Call of Duty: Ghosts and Advanced Warfare.
Microsoft recently acquired Activision for $69 billion, and fans were hoping the tech conglomerate would break the yearly Call of Duty release schedule. If a new leak is to be believed, Microsoft will continue shoveling coal into the Call of Duty train, with games scheduled through 2027.
“CoD fatigue,” as fans call it, has been creeping up for a long while and gamers were hoping for quality to quantity’s place. The demands further escalated with the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, which fans deemed a paid DLC expansion. However, players may not see an adjustment to the yearly Call of Duty cycle. While Activision or Microsoft has not announced any plans beyond 2024 for Call of Duty.
New Call of Duty: Ghosts reportedly coming in 2026
According to the leak, Call of Duty 2026 will be a Ghosts title and is being developed by Infinity Ward. The game is reportedly being worked on under the codename Project Devilwood.
The story stems from leaker Visceral, who has been a notable figure in unearthing information from the Insomniac Games cyberattack. It is unknown whether the information from Visceral comes from Insomniac or elsewhere. The cyberattack on Insomniac unearthed secret documents from across the PlayStation brand, not just information on its upcoming Marvel’s Wolverine.
The last Call of Duty: Ghosts was released in 2013 as the 10th major title in the series. It was received well and the ending set up a sequel with a cliffhanger. Another Ghosts title didn’t come as Infinity Ward moved on to Infinite Warfare.
In the years since, homage has been paid to the game with the Simon “Ghost” Riley character. There’s a high likelihood he would factor into the story, though the particulars remain to be seen.
Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare may come back in 2027
The leak discloses Call of Duty 2027 as an Advanced Warfare title with Sledgehammer Games at the helm.
As with the new Call of Duty: Ghosts, the Advanced Warfare follow-up has a codename of Project Anvil. The 2027 title might be a direct sequel to the original released in 2014 but there are no additional details available about the game yet.
The first Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare introduced advanced movement, and a new version could freshen things up beyond slide canceling. The exo suits operators wore in the game gave them extraordinary mobility during battle. Players could boost jump, dodge, boost slide, and boost dash around the map, making the movement extremely fast and dynamic.
Black Ops 6 is set to be 2024’s Call of Duty game, and precedent suggests that it will land in November. Xbox has an event scheduled in June, which will likely reveal the new Call of Duty title.
